Stephanie Murphy Introduces Bill to Protect NSC from Political Interference

Seventh District Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy is seeking cosponsors for a bill she has introduced in response to President Trump’s controversial reorganization of the National Security Council (NSC), a move critics see as limiting professional military and intelligence involvement in favor of political influence.

“The security of the American people should be more important than partisan politics,” said Murphy in a news release. It is a topic Murphy, whose district includes all of Seminole County, knows well as she once served as a national security specialist in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense.  The measure, named the Protect National Security Council from Political Interference Act of 2017, contains two provisions directly addressing Trump’s changes.  The first ensures that no individual whose primary responsibility “is political in nature” shall be designated as a member of the Council or be authorized to regularly attend meetings of the Council.

The second expresses the Sense of Congress that there should be no limit on the ability of the Director of National Intelligence or the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to attend Principals Committee meetings.
