March Meeting All About Involvement

Cathy Sem Dems Meeting

The main focus of the March 9th meeting of the Seminole County Democratic Party will be about getting most of the 200 or so fired up Democrats who have begun turning out for the monthly meetings actively involved. “Big things are in the works for the Democratic Party of Seminole County,” says Chairman Jeff Wilkinson. “With all of the new support due to the election, we are ready to snap to action.  At our general meeting we will create new working groups focused on key issues and develop near term action plans and calls to action for all of our standing committees.”

In one sure sign of progress, 19 more volunteers will be elected as Precinct Captains (voting members) or Associate Members (non-voting members). This means more than half the county’s 80 precincts will have volunteer captains to lead Democratic Party action.

The bulk of the meeting, starting at 7 pm (doors open at 6:45) at the Eastmonte Civic Center, 830 Magnolia Drive, Altamonte Springs, will be dedicated to introducing the chairs of SemDem’s committees, caucuses and clubs, who will then meet with those interested in the particular group about how they can get involved.

This is the work that goes beyond protest marches. “We want people to be involved in a committee,” said Membership Committee Chair Cathy Lieblich at the Board of Directors’ March 2nd meeting, “and we can offer Associate Memberships to everyone who joins a committee if they are not interested or able to be a Precinct Captain.”  Under Florida Democratic Party rules, there can only be two Precinct Captains, one male and one female, in each of Seminole County’s precincts.

“There is something for everyone,” notes Lieblich. Committees offer opportunities for a wide range of skills and interests: Budget and Finance, Fundraising, Young Democrats, Affirmative Action, Campaign Activities, Precinct Activities, Union Outreach, Community Outreach, Membership, Communications, Events, Environment, Health Care and Education. Clubs and caucuses include: Central Florida Democratic Club, Black Caucus, Disabilities Caucus, Hispanic Caucus and Veterans Caucus.

“We appreciate volunteers’ time, talent and resources,” said Lieblich, “Together we can make Seminole County blue and work on issues that we care about.”

“Come prepared to be an active part of the solutions we create,” Wilkinson concludes.
