Supreme Court Upholds ObamaCare!

Fallback Image
A photoshopped image of President Obama holding up an iPad with CNN’s flubbed headline reading “Mandate Struck Down.” In the moments immediately after the ruling, CNN incorrectly reported that much of the law had been ruled unconstitutional. The image plays on the iconic photo of President Harry S. Truman holding up an incorrect Chicago Tribune headline reading “Dewey Defeats Truman.”

Old news is still good news!

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare. The ruling is a major victory for President Obama and the American people.

The law allows young people to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26, prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions or jacking up rates or cancelling policies for those who become ill. It also prohibits insurance companies from imposing lifetime caps on coverage, meaning that Americans no longer have to worry about going bankrupt just because they get sick.

The act prohibits insurance companies from charging higher rates based on gender and requires them to cover preventative care, including checkups and mammograms. It also provides prescription drug discounts for seniors enrolled in Medicare.

The act also provides subsidies to Americans who can’t afford insurance and requires that by 2014, states set up exchanges that will provide affordable, quality coverage for the 30 million citizens who currently have no insurance.

Those who already have insurance will be able to keep their present coverage and all Americans will continue to be able to choose their own doctors.

The law also reduces the deficit by slowing the rate of growth in the cost of healthcare and helps keep insurance premiums lower by reducing reliance on emergency room treatment for basic healthcare services.

In other words, after a decades-long fight to expand quality healthcare coverage to all Americans, President Obama has delivered!

But in spite of all of the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, Republicans for the past three years have been fighting it every step of the way. Twenty-six states, including Florida, filed the lawsuit that was decided today. In the process, Rick Scott and other Republican governors wasted millions of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to block the expansion of healthcare access to all Americans.

Now that the Supreme Court has dashed their hopes, the GOP is using the issue as a rallying cry for their base. Former Governor Mitt Romney, whose own Massachusetts healthcare law was a blueprint for Obamacare, has vowed to repeal the law on “day one.” He is using that message as a fundraising tool to raise millions of dollars for the November election.

Today’s decision was a great victory for the American people. But don’t be fooled: Republicans will continue to distort the facts in an effort to win in November. If they are successful, all of the progress we have fought so hard to achieve will be rolled back.

In other words, this battle is not over! We need to re-elect President Obama and Congressional Democrats to ensure that the progress we have made is not destroyed. And, we need to elect more Democrats to the Florida Legislature, which will have enormous power with regard to actually implementing the exchanges and other aspects of the law.
